YogaTry: Yoga + Poetry = YogaTry: Wednesdays, June 5-26
with Jessica Chernila
Yoga IS metaphor for the body, let it help us speak/write the metaphor we feel! Yogatry involves a yoga practice that involves poetry writing and expression! In Yoga-try for children we seek to help your child access the playground of meaning that abounds in them through a yoga practice as well as through foundational literacy concepts for all ages.
Yoga-try is a yoga practice where children are ENCOURAGED to NAME and or CREATE the poses themselves, based on ideas , experiences and feelings that they themselves are having , have had and CHOOSE to create. It is also a safe place to explore the poses they have created and/or named through writing about those ideas, experiences and feeling explored in their yoga practice. For the toddlers of yoga-try the literacy portion may simply be making letters or words with their bodies and learning the concepts of what what a Metaphor or simile are.
For older children, tweens and teens of YogatTry we will explore age specific poetry writing exercises utilizing the poses they created and or named. We will explore freeform writing , alliteration and Haiku ,just to name a few.
There will be an opportunity at the end of the 4 week exploration for the participants to perform some of their discoveries as a group so that families can help celebrate their discoveries with them. Yoga can be a place where the foundations of imagination and play become the tool by which we choose to accept transform and utilize our experience.Yoga-try kids will be equipped with a new awareness of breath, basic yoga poses and basic writing techniques that encourage the strength and creative capacity to explore the mind- body connection. How transformative can it be for children to fuse the discovery of their bodies capabilities into meaningful metaphor in a physical as well as literary way? Come find out!
When: 5-6:30 pm Every Wednesday June 5-June 26
